Barbie Angel Project
The Barbie Angel Project began in 2003 when founder and lifelong crocheter, Geri de Moss, got tired of making doilies. Several years ago, her 5-year-old great granddaughter inherited her mother and aunt’s collection of unwanted Barbies. Geri, aka “The Barbie Grandma,” bought an instruction booklet on how to make Barbie doll clothes at a rummage sale and began making dresses for the dolls, which were donated and handed out to the local children by the Guayabitos Homeowners Association every Christmas Eve.
It takes approximately three hours to make a Barbie outfit, the length of an American football game. Geri crochets while watching games and as an avid fan, she measures time by the length of a game. She finds inspiration in the vibrant colors surrounding her here in Mexico and all creations are made from yarn purchased in La Peñita.
Each year, hundreds of Barbie dolls are collected in the United States and Canada and brought to Rincón de Guayabitos by planes, cars and RVs. During barbie dressing parties organized and manned by a group of dedicated volunteers, the “girls” are bathed, coiffed and dressed in new outfits before being distributed to children throughout the Jaltemba Bay area.
We are always in need of volunteers to help collect dolls, make clothing or volunteer at a dressing party.
I will be arriving on November 21st. We will again be looking for barbie doll donations
and volunteers to help at barbie dressing parties. Thanks, Geri
