This Tuesday, October 30th Xaltemba starts their 6th year serving dinner from 5pm to 10pm, with the official Day of the Dead Kick-Off on Friday, November 2nd.
The community at large is invited to the annual Día de Los Muertos / Day of Dead Party with refreshments and appetizers in the Off Street Gallery across the street from the restaurant. This year there is a special art installation memorial by Deb Drew in honor of Eric Nice who passed away earlier this year.
Eric Nice was a well known musician in the Jaltemba community and played at various restaurants and bars including Thursdays at Mateja’s on the beach, he was also a master carpenter of fine furniture. Eric collaborated on many of the local fundraisers by playing and helping organize musicians for these events.
Deborah Drew is a graduate from The Boston Architectural College and teaches college level interior design studios when she’s not in La Peñita. Deb’s overall approach to design is based on sustainability and recycling. All materials used in this Dias de los Muertos art installation memorial are either recycled or soon to be recycled. When Deb isn’t teaching or designing you can find her on the beach looking for found objects to turn into art.
Heading up the kitchen this year is Chef José Arturo Estefanía Ortega from Guanajuato, Mexico. Chef Arturo has worked the last few years in Nuevo Vallarta most recently at Marival Hotel. He has previously headed up kitchens at “El Quinto de la Tarde,” Hotel Playa Escondida, Sayulita, Gran Mayan and Hotel Riu Jalisco among others.
