Stitching Señoras Activities

Most of you have probably never heard of us. We are a group of quilters who get together once a week throughout the winter to work on our projects and share ideas. We usually start in November with 5-6 ladies and swell to 20 or so in January and February.

We come from all over Canada and the USA and the common bond is our love of stitching – anything and everything, but mostly quilting. In order to keep connected over the summer, we usually work on some kind of project in our summer homes. This year we decided to make baby blankets and quilts for people in the cool mountain areas of Mexico. This idea mushroomed and some friends and family members at home donated as well. All in all we collected close to 100 quilts.

We started the New Year on a good foot. In the first photo (above) you can see us on January 1, packing the quilts, clothing and 18 pairs of shoes (more about these later). We then handed over the goods to Ismael who is part of a group called Joven a Joven (Youth to Youth). Their focus this year is on the needs of young children in Caracol, high up in the mountains. In fact, it is so remote that they make the last part of the trek on horseback or foot.

It was pointed out to us that many of the children in the pueblos where Joven a Joven travels to need shoes, and shoes are hard to come by. So we decided to help them out. We are selling raffle tickets for a minimum donation of $20 pesos (or $2 US) for one ticket – or three for $50 pesos (or $5 US). One pack of three buys half of one shoe! The prizes are shown in the second photo and include a twin size quilt, a lap robe and a table runner… all very colourful and hand made. The draw will be made on February 14, 2014.

If you would like to win one of these gorgeous prizes you need to buy a ticket. If you aren’t acquainted with any of us, you can send a note to one of these email addresses:

Karin Marchant at marchisland@hotmail.com

We will also post other Jaltemba Bay ticket outlets on the forum in the near future.

Joy will also be able to give you information about our meeting time and place.

We thank you in advance for your support.
