Jaltemba Bay Mourns the Loss of Three Locals

Ramón Ibarra Gutierrez, age 68, passed away of a heart attack on Saturday, August 18 while in Mexico City. His funeral was held near his birthplace in Michoacan shortly thereafter. Ramón owned and operated the large Helados Michoacan ice cream store on the south side of main street in La Peñita. For 27 years, he handcrafted his ice cream, ice cream bars and paletas using fresh fruit, nuts, Mexican vanilla and other tropical ingredients and he always served them with a smile.

Becky Kemery, an occasional yet always enriching resident of La Peñita, passed away in Sandpoint, ID on Saturday, August 18 after a brief, but courageous encounter with cancer. Becky was 56 years old. Funeral services were held on August 25. There will also be a memorial weekend celebration of Becky’s Medicine for the Sandpoint community in mid-September at Medicine Circle Eco-Retreat. Visit Becky’s Caring Bridge Journal for details.

Ginger Payne, a fun-loving and active member of the Jaltemba Bay community, had a heart attack on Friday, August 24 and passed away hours later in Watsonville, CA. In an email, her husband, Byron, stated that even though “the cancer, radiation and poor circulation were too much for her heart, she went out in good Ginger-style.” Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 8 in Pine Grove, CA. The family also plans to celebrate Ginger’s life when they return to Guayabitos this winter.

We send our sincere condolences to all their families and friends.
